21st july @ bang bang club: DEATH SENTENCE: PANDA!

Death Sentence: Panda! have a playful and unique sound. Their music draws heavily on traditional Chinese and Korean folk music, ragtime, New Orleans-style marching bands and hardcore punk. Cropped and impulsive pop songs bubble over with exuberance, forever underpinned by the group's unusual instrumentation of pitch-shifted clarinet, flute, xylophone and drums. Add to this mix Kim West's impassioned and oft-spooked vocal and Death Sentence: Panda! come into their own.

Their latest album “Insects Awaken” was released on Upset the Rhythm (gay against you, john maus, the sticks). They only play a few shows in Germany this time. so, be lucky to see them in Berlin!

starts: 9pm (on time!)

location: BANG BANG CLUB, s-hackescher markt

Quotes:

„They add a cartoonish sense of drama to the trad Bay Area post-punk sound, using nothing more than a flute, a pitch-shifted clarinet, a drum kit and a whole lotta hollering.“ (southern records)

“Death Sentence: Panda! dwell in a mystery valley with paths tread by ceremonious foxes, a Kurosawa dream throwback or the most haunted scene ever to drop on the pixie dust sprinkled floor of Studio Ghibli’s editing cabin, lure you in the zone with the mystery chimes of a tribal stomp prelude to an onslaught of Crass style no wave terror with enough bass to make Drop the Lime go whoah, now you know what it feels like to be chased by the Chinese version of the Evil Dead, Oni styles and a flute & drums finale that get down prog like this was the 1974. Space flexes it disturbing muscles, you never knew you could go to so many places in such little time.“ (20jazzfunkgreats)

„They take a generally overdone genre like noise punk and add their own skronky artness to it. Like a slightly mellower Melt Banana with horns. Or They Shoot Horses Don’t They if they took lessons from Lightning Bolt. This is in your face and impossible to ignore. It’s loud as hell and somehow only coming from 3 people.“ (diskant)

...still the coolest club in town. trashed, but fine music taste. we were really glad to have helped their reputation a bit more - but nearly being a bit too loud and threatening the existence of the place... but all went well.
