6/11/ @ madame claude: Starving Weirdos (us) + Nudge (us) + dominic bouffard (uk)

Los Angeles band Nudge, with main members Brian Foote (audraglint records/grizzly bear, atlas sound) and Honey Owens (jackie-o motherfucker), "birthed premillenially in Portland with the intent to push forward with emergent technologies and antiquated kit alike", just released their new album As good as gone on Chicago based Kranky records, the label known for exquisite taste and home of deerhunter and atlas sound, of which Foote has also been involved in production and as live musician. Previously they released beside others on tigerbeat6 (dolby anol).

Quotes:

"The name Nudge chose when they formed in the late 1990s turned out to be prescient. Their first few releases, which dabbled in electronic ambience, heavy-beat IDM, and fractured funk, were too schizophrenic to fit the moniker. But on their fourth album, As Good as Gone, the group sticks to gentle pushes and soft prods-- the kind that don't disturb or bruise, but are impossible to ignore. Their sounds approach slowly and rub against each other cautiously. The music is rarely sparse, and often quite full and busy, but there's no jostling for position. Everything interacts carefully, with a tap on the shoulder rather than a shove." pitchfork

"nudge inhabit an unusual crossroads where rock, dub, techno, afrobeat, improvisation, and electro-acoustic experimental music meet- while this might sound confounding, it actually makes perfect sense in our increasingly multi-lingual soundworld, and this approach predates most of the current in-vogue "easy" hybrids.. The band has been particularly fast-forward in their convolution of "live vs. programmed" boundaries..." community library

"But add two additional descriptors, experimental and shoegaze, and one can begin to piece together the eccentric music Nudge makes. (...) Nudge creates music well ahead of its time." fense post

"the group's central player Brian Foote currently lives in Los Angeles, so his fuzzy extended psychedelic constructions are emerging from a sunnier place, even if they sound just as gray." stereogum

"While the subterranean groove and minor key construction on As Good As Gone evoke a more haunting, nighttime-appropriate flavor, there’s also a visceral optimism that runs underneath the record’s seven songs like groundwater. Perhaps it’s the playfulness between genres and moods, or the freewheeling construction of the songs…" the decibel tolls

STARVING WEIRDOS from california "a wild and desperate style music band", who started making music together in 1998, have also just released a new double album out on weird forest, after many previous releases on different labels. live they have been sharing stages with lucky dragons, deerhunter, seabear and many others.

quotes:

"Four flippin’ sides of confuse-adelia for both the farm-fresh kid to the well-heeled cad." weird forest

"...building on guitar drones, synthesized bleeps and squelches and all manner of instrumental tomfoolery. What's interesting though is that at no times does this feel overly improvised or throwaway (as so much of this stuff tends to), rather you get the sense that these guys are aware exactly what they're doing. (...) Highly recommended." boomkat

"even though Starving Weirdos routinely break out the rain sticks, the horns, the hand drums, the gee-tars, or the cup-and-ball, at its core their art is a kind of deep-forest-ghetto-musique-concrète. You can never tell if what you're hearing is a real-time performance or a product of copious editing and overdubbing, whether those sounds emanated from tapes or from live instruments, whether it occurred in a tangible three-dimensional space or in a virtual sound-card reality. Most of the time, it's a combination of all these, and the results are profoundly transportive, disorienting." bo'weavil recordings

"The pair weave intricate tapestries of sound from strands of electroacoustic improvisation, ambient noise, free-folk, and musique concréte. The density of these works is matched only by their clarity of purpose and execution -- each piece brings into existence a distinct sound-world, rendered with a pointillistic attention to sonic detail that belies the duo's economy of means." cafe du nord

"oneiric free-form noisescapes that ran the gamut from ear-piercing walls of noise to otherworldly drones, always maintaining a gloomy underlying leitmotif, as if they were soundtracks to the post-nuclear world." scaruffi

"It's hard to sound totally unique, especially when you're trafficking in the overpopulated world of abstract free noise or whatever, but the more we listen to these guys, the more distinctive their sound becomes & the more fascinating their approach to making it seems." aquarius records

"We try to foster an approach that’s free yet focused. Most of it is created on the spot and so isn’t repeatable." starving weirdos in vice

"carefully constructed worlds of drone" dusted magazine

"I'd guess fans of Fuck Buttons might like this, or anyone who likes music that isn't really music." drowned in sound board

dominic bouffard is of london origin, residing in berlin, where he is currently involved in a production of shakespeare's sonnets at the berliner ensemble under the musical direction of rufus wainwright. he will open up the night with a solo acoustic set.

...still the coolest club in town. trashed, but fine music taste. we were really glad to have helped their reputation a bit more - but nearly being a bit too loud and threatening the existence of the place... but all went well.

'Martin Tetzlaff ist schon längst kein unbekanntes Gesicht mehr. Seit fast 10 Jahren, in denen er in den Berliner Indiebands „Paul is dead“, „Software“ und „Phonetic“ spielte und diese mitprägte, kennt man ihn schon. Es sind aber seine eigenen Songs, die ihn auszeichnen. Drei EP’s und...Weiterlesen
