High Heels is the solo project of Austin Brown. Last year he self-released his solo album Pink Noise, on which Josiah Wolf from WHY? and Michael Corrigan from AFGHAN WHIGS joined him. Previously, between 2002 and 2006, he was singer and guitarist of Cincinnati based band Staggering Statistics, with affinity to bands like Sonic Youth, Television, Pavement. In 2008 he joined WHY? as bass player, followed them on an extensive tour, on which most songs for Pink Noise were written, but left again soon after. "he performs solo with a band of amps. the amplifiers and speaker cabinets are home-made and quite small, but the end result is lush with texture. simultaneous single-tone drones, at octaves of one another or harmonies with each other, create a warm bed of sound for quiet singing and gentle guitar."
quotes:
"Ultrasuede was the site of a recent “trans-Atlantic” recording session. (...) He [austin brown]’s a prolific writer so it’s no surprise that he’s managed to write two albums worth of songs while touring with Why. (...) During the drum overdub sessions, Austin was in the control room via iChat video while monitoring via custom mix straight off the board in near real time. We all thought it was pretty cool." ultrasuede studios cincinnati about pink noise
