08/02 @Westgermany: DD/MM/YYYY (can) + CLARA CLARA (fr)

DD/MM/YYYY (pronounce: day month year) are a quintet from Toronto, Canada. the band formed, as the story goes, after they had decided to become pacifists. so they started to make music, that would furthermore expand ther minds, "to push limits and shake traditions", and "to communicate their story and ideas with any one with an open mind, ear and heart". hence a name "as a placeholder, as a way to not have a name, or at least a static one". now being on tour through europe, they promote their last album Black Square, released on We are busy bodies and brought to the continent by Deleted Art. the album, so the band, "is the by-product of van-confined wanderlust, inevitable maturity & our growing comfort level in the studio environment." DD/MM/YYYY, so they say themselves to describe their sound, are "inclined to explore, open to all concepts, and are stubborn only with regard to a ‘no-style’ approach to making music." as influences are mentioned "the works of Frank Zappa, Melt Banana, Dada art and video games." live you can "anticipate an urgent set of elastic songs – dramatic & tempered by healthy doses of irreverence that make it very hard to stand still. A swat-team style five man workout along with healthy jogs from one instrument to another, arrangement-swapping, and seemingly random walks on & off the stage." in the passed months they shared stages with sBach, Video Hippos, Don Caballero, Japanther, No Age and Dan Deacon! "We have dug our roots into bamboo forests, living rooms, sushi joints, landfills, boats, beaches and swimming pools – and we bring these experiences to all larger venue & festivals that’ll have us." let's see if the derelict dentist place on kottbusser tor can keep up with those.

quotes:

“think hyper math-punk with touches of prog and hardcore– but in practice produces simple, even catchy pleasures. Swapping duties on vocals, drums, guitars, keyboard, and woodwinds, these five musicians tie all their talents and influences together by injecting every moment with chaotic energy.” Pitchfork

” … the group continues to blast as much noise as possible, with fast fingered riffs and blazing synths leading the way. Easily one of the best experimental noise records this year.” Metro

“Always evolving sonically and riding an experimental edge wherever possible, this Toronto quintet’s math-rock drums, noisy synths and punk-inspired vocals make them sound like they’re perpetually caught in a violent tornado of awesomeness; beneath every mess are cool hooks calling out to the attentive listener.” Now Magazine

"DD/MM/YYYY drove audiences to destruction through dance" CMJ

"Experimental outfit DD/MM/YYYY got the crowds jumping with a set that showcased a vast range of unconventional musicianship." Gigwise

"DD/MM/YYYY roared, their jittery, near-instrumental math-rhythms resembling a punk-rock Battles." The Fly

"DMY's blend of loud punk, noise-rock soared above the realm of constructive rhythmic beats and sailed straight for kinetic chaos and achieved deafening clamor." Blurt Mag

"More angles than a geometry test" Herohill

"Full of sharp angles, it's an artsy and adventurous amalgam of wiry guitars and prime-number time signatures, circular grooves and yelpy vocals, syncopated rhythms and noisy head-trip effects. Imagine Devo trying to impersonate a prog band and you're halfway there." Sun Media

"zwischen der Art-Attitüde von Bands wie LES SAVY FAV, den hypnotischen Wiederholungen von Bands wie ONEIDA" ox fanzine

"If I was still writing four-chord rock n roll, it’s kind of like doing a disservice to myself. It’s like you’re halting your progression in your craft or whatever you’re making. I think we’ve all tried to make it a point to really challenge ourselves physically and intellectually." matt in: summer works

CLARA CLARA are a three piece from Lyon, France. having been on tour through europe the first time in 2006, they changed from a noisy, instrumental and drum based band into a more post-punk outfit with a focus on francois virot's vocals, who therefore reduced his drum kit. the beat remains though still a driving part, beside catchy bass lines, played by francois' brother charles, and the melodious keyboard of amelie. In 2007 francois virot also started playing solo acoustic shows, with which he gained some reputation. his solo album yes or no was released by clapping music in 2008. being tired again of playing acoustic guitar, francois started melting his solo ventures with the sound of clara clara. some of those new songs were already performed in april 2009, when we had clara clara the last time with action beat and don vito at westgermany, now a new full length album is going to be expected for march, out on clapping music. we are very curious and are not getting tired of this band. get more info and songs in the blog.

quotes:

"This band has an intense sound using the keyboard (Amelie Lambert) as the melodic digital force, chaotic /psychotic drums and frenetic electric bass (Charles Virot) relying heavily on distortion. Clara Clara plays hypnotic jams with occasional moments of sing along type phrasing. The sound is explosive, erupting with rhythms and very loud distortion. The crowd moved in a trance like motion of ecstasy until the last song, leaving a sweaty musty residue in the garage cocoon, to get some oxygen." obsession collection
